Hung Kyun’s „Ten Lethal Bare Hand Techniques“ (Sap Duk Sau)

Leung Daat - Hung Kyun’s „Ten Lethal Bare Hands Techniques“ (Sap Duk Sau)

Grand Master Wong Fei Hung, founder of „Modern Hung Kyun“, was one of the most famous Masters of Southern Chinese boxing.

„Iron Thread Set“ (Tit Sin Kyun) – Just for Strength and Health?

Hung Ga Kyun "Iron Thread Set" (Tit Sin Kyun)Question: I have heard that Tit Sin Kyun is not for fighting, but for training the internal energy and for making the bridge hands stronger and more pliable. I find this to be a contridiction, because Lam Sai Wing treatise indicate that it is the best set to strengthen one for combat. I understand that the movements of set is for manipulating and moving Chi to different parts of the body, but does that mean that the hand have no combat use?

„Three Treasures“, Three Hints: „Hard as Iron, Soft as Thread“

Lam Sai Wing - "Iron Thread Set" (Tit Sin Kyun)

Secret „internal“ set of Siu Lam/Old Hung Ga, last of the „Three Treasures of Hung Kyun“, passed to the current generation by Tit Kiu Saam’s disciple Lam Fuk Sing to Wong Fei Hung – legendary “Iron Thread Set”. Tit Sin Kyun finishes what Gung Ji Fuk Fu has started – it completes the circle.

Only selected few learned “Iron Thread Set”. Lam Sai Wing has learned Tit Sin Kyun after 16 years of study under Wong Fei Hung. It is a harsh and unspoken truth that even many very famous Grand Masters a well as current Masters have never formaly learned Tit Sin Kyun from their Sifu – the either learned it from (watching) their Si Hing, from Jyu Yu Jai’s book, or a video, usually using the Dragon Form part of „Five Animal Set“/“Ten Forms Set“ as the basis for re-construction of Tit Sin Kyun. Hung Ga Kyun’s „One Strike, One Kill“

Hung Ga Kyun One Strike, One KillI was training in Hong Kong’s Lam Gwun under the guidance of my Si Baak, Simon Lam Chun Chung, brother of my Sifu. We were discussing application of various Hung Ga techniques as well as fighting strategy and of course, training methodology.

I learned that day a lot, but one “secret” advice he gave me has influenced me and our Practical Hung Kyun training a lot. I asked him: “Si Baak, what would you recommend for fighting? What is the most important thing, neglected in training? Any tips“? Continue reading

Hung Ga Kyun’s Core Curriculum: Bare Fists, Knives and Long Pole

Aggressive “Self-Defense” Hung Kyun Way: No Matter What, I Will…

Hung Ga Kyun Self-DefenceA typical self-defense class: If the opponent does this, i do this, if he does that, i do that… You know what i mean, right? Right?

Well, let us examine little bit different view on reality-based “self-defense”, (Practical) Hung Kyun way.

Jyu Yu Jai writes in his book on Lam Sai Wing’s “Taming of the Tiger in Gung Pattern” (Gung Ji Fuk Fu Kyun), #67:

“Curl and Fist [strike]” (Yat Chau Yat Kyun) technique: Regardless what technique [the opponent uses], i use “Curl and Strike” (Yat Chau Yat Cheui) pattern. This fist [technique is called] “Wood-Clamping Strike Combination” (Lin Waan Gaap Muk Cheui) with left and right advancing steps.

Generative and Destructive Cycle of Hung Ga Kyun’s Five Elements

Hung Ga Five ElementsTraditional Chinese cosmology as well as systems like (modern) Xing Yi Quan have simple but profound theory of “Mutual Generation” as well as “Mutual Destruction” of “Five Elements”:

“Mutual Generation” (Seung Saang) sequence = Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water

“Mutual Conquest” (Seung Sing)/”Mutual Overcoming” (Seung Hak) sequence = Wood, Earth, Water, Fire, Metal.

The order of the Elements in Ng Hang Kyun part “Ten Forms Set” (Sap Ying Kyun) follows neither of these cycles. The question is: How is it with “Five Elements” (Ng Hang) of Hung Kyun? Continue reading
