“Three Treasures”, Three Hints: “Tiger and Crane Combination is… “

Hung Ga Kyun Tiger Crane (Fu Hok Seung Ying)“Tiger and Crane Double Form” (Fu Hok Seung Ying), second of so called „Three Treasures of Hung Kyun“ (Hung Kyun Saam Bou), is almost synonymous with today’s “modern” Hung Ga.

Wong Fei Hung lineage of Hung Kyun is often reffered to as „Tiger and Crane Hung Kyun“ (Fu Hok Hung Kyun) in Southern China, as well as simply „Tiger Crane System“ (Fu Hok Paai).

One of Lam Sai Wing’s nicknames was “Mr. Tiger and Crane” (Fu Hok Sing Saang); according to one of the apocryphal legends, tiger and crane appeared at the the door of Lam family household when Grand Master Lam was born. Continue reading

Aggressive “Self-Defense” Hung Kyun Way: No Matter What, I Will…

Hung Ga Kyun Self-DefenceA typical self-defense class: If the opponent does this, i do this, if he does that, i do that… You know what i mean, right? Right?

Well, let us examine little bit different view on reality-based “self-defense”, (Practical) Hung Kyun way.

Jyu Yu Jai writes in his book on Lam Sai Wing’s “Taming of the Tiger in Gung Pattern” (Gung Ji Fuk Fu Kyun), #67:

“Curl and Fist [strike]” (Yat Chau Yat Kyun) technique: Regardless what technique [the opponent uses], i use “Curl and Strike” (Yat Chau Yat Cheui) pattern. This fist [technique is called] “Wood-Clamping Strike Combination” (Lin Waan Gaap Muk Cheui) with left and right advancing steps.

Use and Meaning of the Sounds, Shouts and Screams

Hung Ga Kyun SoundsQuestion: Why do we use and when should we use the corresponding sounds for each animal and technique in a form?

Is there a deeper meaning? Is there a rhythm we should follow, or should we use a couple of sounds every so often?

Ted Ji

Answer: Shouting sounds is one of the typical features of southern Chinenese martial arts – “Crying out lout, making sounds” (Fu Hok Jok Seng in Cantonese). For example, in Fat Saan Hung Sing Choi Lei Fat they use “Yik!” for strikes, “Wa!” for claws and “Tek!” for kicks.

In our Hung Kyun basic sets, we usually use “Hei!”, “Hai!” or “Hit!” for strikes, “Wa!” for Tiger Claws. Other lineages use other sounds as well, for example “Sss!” for snake finger thrusts. Continue reading

Generative and Destructive Cycle of Hung Ga Kyun’s Five Elements

Hung Ga Five ElementsTraditional Chinese cosmology as well as systems like (modern) Xing Yi Quan have simple but profound theory of “Mutual Generation” as well as “Mutual Destruction” of “Five Elements”:

“Mutual Generation” (Seung Saang) sequence = Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water

“Mutual Conquest” (Seung Sing)/”Mutual Overcoming” (Seung Hak) sequence = Wood, Earth, Water, Fire, Metal.

The order of the Elements in Ng Hang Kyun part “Ten Forms Set” (Sap Ying Kyun) follows neither of these cycles. The question is: How is it with “Five Elements” (Ng Hang) of Hung Kyun? Continue reading

White Crane, Wing Cheun and Hung Ga Kyun

White Crane, Wing Cheun and Hung Ga Kyun2004 was one of my best training visits of Hong Kong and China. I have been living in my Sifu’s house in Shenzhen for couple of months and we have been really busy, training very hard.

Every morning we woke up at 6 o’clock AM and went to the park to practice the precious “Iron Thread Set” (Tit Sin Kyun) – every single day, for more than two hours.

After the practice we went to the neighbouring street restaurant for a bowl of rice porridge with eggs or fish and hot tofu milk. Discussing the origins of the “Iron Thread”, one of the “Three Treasures” of Hung Ga Kyun, my Sifu told me an old legend, handed down from the masters of previous generations to Grandmaster Lam Saiwing and his father, Grand Master Lam Jou. Legends of the Old Hung Ga Kyun Masters: „Iron Claw“ Ling Waan Gai Wong Fei Hung‘s fame and fighting prowess attracted many challengers. One day a huge gang of martial artists of other style arrived to Bou Ji Lam and tore down the school sign. One of them has  cried out loud: “Wong Fei Hung, come out, we challenge you to to Bei Mou, Comparison of Fighting Skills!”

Wong sifu wasn’t at his Mou Gwun at that time, only one of his senior disciples, Ling Wan Gaai, nicknamed “Steel Claw, Iron Leg” (Gong Jaau Tit Geuk) leading a class of his junior classmates. Annoyed and angry, he replied without hesitation:

“Here I am,” he said. Challenge accepted! Continue reading
