Yes. Double-ended staff, trident (sort of), and other weapons are still used by police security, especially in metro and train stations.
Relatively recently there have been few quite horrible knife mass attacks in China, so the Chinese government has instilled strict security features – scanners, guards, and – various weapons.
Here is the report about the massacre from 2014 in Kunming (Wikipedia):
The 2014 Kunming attack was a terrorist attack in the Chinese city of Kunming, Yunnan, on 1 March 2014. The incident, targeted against civilians, left 29 civilians and 4 perpetrators[1] dead with more than 140 others injured.
At around 21:20, a group of eight knife-wielding men and women attacked passengers at the city’s railway station. Both male and female attackers pulled out long-bladed knives and stabbed and slashed passengers. At the scene, police killed four assailants and captured one injured female.
And here is the footage:
On my last trip to the Middle Kingdom I (secretly) took couple of pictures – check them out below.
This lady at the entrance to the metro is armed with double-ended staff (Seung Tau Gwan), also called “Eyebrow-Height Staff” (Chai Mei Gwan).
Chinese guard armed with a special (counter-knife) weapon, which resembles the traditional Hung Ga Kyun trident, without the middle point. The guard would use the weapon to push the assailant to the wall where he can be disarmed.
This is a weapon rack at the exit of the train station. The more narrow “trident” is used to push the attacker (after being pressed to the wall by the bigger “trident”) at his throat and further immobilize him before disarm.
I would love to see the training of the security guards!
